ESTEDDFOD: Welsh Language Esports Tournament with real time graphics made in unreal engine 5.4

We’ve been quietly working behind the scenes on an exciting project: developing new branding and live on-screen elements for ESTEDDFOD, the first Welsh language esports tournament. M-sparc approached us to bring our sports broadcast expertise to this groundbreaking event, combining Welsh culture with competitive gaming.

Branding a Welsh Esports Tournament

Before diving into the technical aspects, we focused on nailing the ESTEDDFOD branding. Our process included:

  1. Discovery meetings with Aled from M-Sparc and Tom from Haia
  2. Defining a dynamic visual direction to reflect EAFC and Rocket League gameplay
  3. Aligning the brand with high-profile partners like FAW (Football Association of Wales)
  4. Creating concepts and design systems for on-screen graphics and marketing assets

Unreal Engine 5.4: The Future of Live Graphics

We’re currently building all motion elements in Unreal Engine 5.4.2, leveraging its new capabilities for live on-screen graphics. Key features include:

  • Real-time rendering for dynamic esports broadcasts
  • Motion design plug-in for familiar workflow similar to After Effects
  • Seamless integration of 3D elements and 2D graphics

Our team is documenting this journey into real-time graphics, and we’ll be sharing regular updates on the ESTEDDFOD project and our experiences using Unreal Engine as a motion design tool.

Stay tuned for more insights on:

  • The evolution of ESTEDDFOD’s visual identity
  • Challenges and breakthroughs in Unreal Engine 5.4 for broadcast graphics
  • The future of Welsh-language esports and its impact on the gaming community
